Crossroads Education Hub

Barn Conversion | East Ayrshire

Crossroads Education Hub is an initiative of the residents formerly served by the local authority school at Crossroads, East Ayrshire, and is a proposal to form a Community Rural School.

Initial plans will see a local barn converted to a classroom and meeting space with refurbishments to existing stone work, new openings formed and a secondary structure internally. This will provide a base for home schooling with space to accommodate other local primary school age pupils as well as adult learners and community groups.

Kitchen, toilet, storage and office provision is arranged to one side of the proposals allowing for a flexible and double height class room space that will provide an excellent and alternative learning environment. The thick stone walls are utilized internally with cill heights dropped to create informal seating areas while larger existing barn openings are reused as entrances with sliding barn doors repaired and brought back to use. A robust and restrained material palette is proposed to cope with wear and tear of a programme that could see increased outdoor learning in a rural environment.

These proposals have been developed in collaboration with David Hasson of studioLINK.
