Crown Gardens is an extension to a B-Listed townhouse in Glasgow's West End. The client asked Dress for the Weather to explore options for additional space within their sunken courtyard garden; to create a garden/dining room connected to the kitchen area but also a way of improving access to the courtyard.
A new single-storey extension replaces a smaller, coal shed construction that had been adapted. The pitched roof of the extension sits perpendicular to the existing building. The pitch allows for a dramatic entertaining space by creating a 4.5m internal ceiling height while also allowing for carefully positioned rooflights. The rooflights catch the morning sun while also restricting views down from the walkway and windows above. Clad in natural slate, from the garden the extension is partially hidden. The large folding patio doors open out to the sunken courtyard across a level threshold, connecting inside and out.
